3.1 Practice

Statement: We get to know a character through the relationship they have with others.

A tragic hero warns us of the danger of human error, they force us to reflect on how blindness to human imperfection leads to grave error. ‘King Lear’s’ relationships with his daughters, Kent and the fool make us, the audience feel pity towards him as his blindness to the true intentions of the people who are closest to him. William Shakespeare shows through Lear’s relationships he exposes more of his true self, we reflect on his imperfection and become more invested in his character. His irrational decision making in dividing his kingdom amongst his daughter shows he is inherently flawed by his excessive pride.
